Adrian Newey will reportedly earn a salary higher than 18 Formula One drivers when he moves to Aston Martin in the first quarter of 2025. The top engineer is ending 19 years at Red Bull and has decided to join Aston Martin following discussions with billionaire owner Lawrence Stroll at their Silverstone base.
Newey became hugely in-demand when he announced in May that he would be stepping down from his role at Red Bull. He is to spend the remainder of the season designing their new hypercar before departing within the first three months of next year.
There were links with Mercedes and Ferrari, where a link-up with Lewis Hamilton may have been tempting, but the 65-year-old has opted for Stroll’s ambitious and lucrative project. According to BBC Sport, Newey has agreed a five-year deal worth a staggering £30million per year.
Only Hamilton and Red Bull‘s Max Verstappen earn more than that figure.
An Aston Martin spokesperson said: “Adrian has been linked to many teams and would be an asset to any team, but we don’t have anything to announce.”
Newey had been chief technical officer at Red Bull and has played a pivotal role in the team’s recent success. Despite a worrying dip in performance, Verstappen remains in command of the drivers’ title and could still win it for the fourth-consecutive year.
Red Bull agreed to end Newey’s contract a year early and he could now have a significant impact on Aston Martin’s design for 2026. Stroll is determined for Aston to be among the leading teams and is conducting an aggressive recruitment process of F1’s top engineers.
Mercedes’ former engine chief Andy Cowell join them as chief executive officer at the start of October. Meanwhile, Ferrari chassis technical director Enrico Cardile is due to arrive as chief technical officer.
Fitting those figures into a coherent working structure will be a challenge for Stroll.
